Richter Magnitude Scale

The Richter magnitude scale measures the earthquake's energy in its center. This not necessarily equivalent to its destructive force. An earthquake of magnitude 6 close to the surface can be far more destructive than a magnitude 7 in 500 km depth. Because of such shortcomings various other scales are used. Nevertheless is the Richter scale the most popular. It has been named after the American seismologist Charles Richter who presented it in 1935.

The scale is logarithmic meaning a difference of 1 in magnitude is a factor of 31.6 in energy. A quake of magnitude 8 is therefore 1000 times more powerful as a quake of magnitude 6.

Do you know that the USA celebrates the Richter Scale Day every April 26?
